Cache Valley Biathlon Saturday May 28th 2011 9:00 - Noon
The Biathlon is a 5 mile run and 16.5 mile bicycle race that starts and ends in Wellsville. You can expect about 200 participants with the first participants crossing in about 1 hour and 15 minutes. Amateur Radio operators are stationed at key points along the running and cycling course, watch for problems, and report and track first and last runners and cyclists. This is a very easy communications event and perfect for your first time. You can operate from your vehicle, with a mobile or handheld. One of the repeaters is used for this event.
Tour De Cure (Box Elder County) June 11th 2011
A leisure ride of cyclists going anywhere from 25 to 101 miles. Amateur Radio operators may located at stationary positions or mobile in their own or another vehicle. An easy communications event. Some positions may require an all day commitment. A handheld with external antenna or mobile radio may be required for some positions.
Bike the Bear August 13th 2011
Bike the Bear is a casual cycling event around Bear Lake, and sponsored by the Boy Scouts of America. Last year positions were stationary at rest stops along the route. Requires mobile radio with antenna to participate. An Easy communications event. Plan on an 8 hour event.
Rocket Recover June 16th – 18th 2011
A group of amateur rocket experimenters from Universities get together in the South West dessert of Utah to launch their rockets. Amateur Radio operators put small transmitters on them and then help track them if needed. A three day event. You will need to provide your own transportation and lodging. Usually stay in Green River Wyoming.
Little Red Ridding Hood June 4th 2011
A casual cycling event of 1000 or more ladies with various routes and distances starting in Wellsville UT. Most positions are 6 hours or more. The repeaters are used and a handheld radio will work from most all locations. An easy communication event.
Wasatch Back Relay Friday June 17th. 2011
This is a 100 mile team relay event that starts at Central Park in Logan and ends up in Park City Utah. Amateur Radio Operators are positioned at relay exchange points. There is very little radio communications for this event. Some areas do not have cell phone service so Amateur Radio helps in hooking teams up and emergency communications.
MS 150 June 25th – 26th 2011
Usually the same weekend as the nationwide Amateur Radio Field Day, this casual cycling ride attracts more than 2000 riders. Amateur Radio Operators are needed for both Saturday and Sunday. Many radio positions available from riding in a vehicle to stationary rest stops. Plan on all day both or either day that you choose to operate. Hand held would work for many stations, but a mobile with 40 watts would be needed for canyons. The route usually covers many areas of cache valley including Black Smith Fork Canyon.
LOTOJA Saturday September 10th 2011
The longest single day bike race in North America, LOTOJA attracts 1000 cyclists competing in more than 23 races. Amateur Radio Operators should have experience with at least one other even before attempting LOTOJA. Mobile radio with 40 watts of power or more is required for most positions. A handheld with external mag mount will work for some. Most positions are all day long. Individuals are needed to ride with the race officials and race director. Others are needed to drive their own vehicles. If you drive your own vehicle there must be two of you in the vehicle for most positions. Race organizer provides rooms for mobile stations who’s assignment takes them all the way to Jackson. A very long day. A mandatory training session and meetings are required for volunteers.
Top of Utah Marathon Sept 17th 2011
A 26 mile marathon with over 2000 participants. Most Amateur Radio Positions are stationary. Many are in Blacksmith Fork Canyon and require a mobile radio with 40 watts and a good external antenna to get out. This is a great event to get out and get on the air with. Many positions are done before noon, while others will end around 2:00 pm.
Bear 100 September 23th & 24th 2011
A 100 mile foot race that starts at 6:00 am in Logan and ends in Idaho a day later. Amateur Radio operators track all the participants by logging them in and out at feed stations throughout the course. We like to have 2 or more radio operators at each station. Some require 4 wheel drive access. If you are new to Amateur Radio you can be teamed up with someone who has done it before. Some positions are for a few hours while others start later in the day and go into the night or early morning hours depending on location.
