New Hams Guide to Using Repeaters

Here are a few files I found that the ARRL had on there Web Site that is good for old and new ham to look at. The New Hams Gude To Repeaters. Repeater Terminology.

Autopatch Usage

Please be aware that we have an open Phone-Patch. Thanks to the courtious and proper use of our users. Let me take a section out of the Repeater manual on the usage of each of the Autopatches.

How to use the Phone-Patch:

Quick and Simple:

 Mt Logan System 146.72, 146.26, 145.31, 449.625 and 147.200 when linked

Key your Mic.Punch in the Asterisk and the Phone Number "*752-1234" When done Key Mic. and Punch Pound "#"

 Valley Floor 146.64

Key your Mic.Punch in the Asterisk "*" un-key wait for Dial tone Then Re-Key then 9 and the Phone Number "9752-1234" When done Key Mic. and Punch Pound "#"

This is the full step by step version with everything to keep you legal:

 a. Listen to be sure the repeater is clear.

b. If it is an emergency, then break in by using the word “break” or give your call sign between transmissions.

c. If it is not an emergency, the wait until the frequency is clear, or if necessary give you call sign between transmissions and ask if you can make a phone-patch. The word break should be reserved for emergency break-ins.

d. Give your call sign and state you purpose. i.e. “KB7HAM for the patch”.

e. Auto dial

f. Press and Hold PTT then type A”nnn”. nnn being your autodial number then release. Goto “i”

g. Manual Dial

h. On the 72 system and it’s links (147.26, 449.625, 146.72, 145.31) you need to key PTT dial * and the phone number all in one session without letting up on the push-to-talk button*.

i. When the party answers the phone you need to let them know that you are using a radio phone and it will be necessary for them to wait until you finish speaking before they speak.

j. When finished with your conversation bring down the patch (key PTT type # ) and give your call sign.

k. The phone-patch to the cache-valley exchange is available through the 146.72, 145.31, 147.26, 449.625, 146.64, 147.240, and 449.325 repeaters.

* The 146.640 repeater autopatch code is different.

* To bring it up, listen for a dial tone, then dial 9+ the number. # will hang it up.

Rules and Reminders on Phone-Patches

a. Everyone should know how to use the phone-patch.Testing the phone-patch to become familiar with it’s operation is okay.

b. No business related phone calls.

c. The patch has a 3 minute timer. It can be reset for emergency calls only.

d. Ask yourself if the call is really necessary. Please avoid the “I will be home in 5 minutes” calls.

e. The phone-patch should not be used to avoid a toll call or when a regular or cellular phone is available.

f. If there is an emergency, car break-down, etc, you can use the patch to call a wrecker or summon any help you need.

g. Remember to identify yourself before you bring up the patch and after you bring it down.

h. Remember that you are the control operator when making a call and are responsible for what those on the other end say. (third-party traffic)
