ARRL Phone Sweepstakes - 19 November 2011

BARC will be participating in the Sweepstakes, operating from the club ham shack on the USU campus on Saturday November 19th from 2100 UTC until 0700 UTC (that's 2 PM to midnight MST).  The ham shack is located in the Engineering Lab Building room EL224.  If you would like to participate in the Sweeps, drop by and we will get you involved with whatever you would like to do, making contacts, logging contacts, or just watching what goes on.

The ARRL 2011 Phone Sweepstakes runs from 2100 UTC on 19 November through 0259 UTC on 21 November.  The Sweepstakes is the oldest domestic contest and for the first time in years, the bands will have plenty to offer Technician license holders, too!  A portion of the 10 meter band is available to Technician license holders for CW and phone operation. As many of you have noticed working on HF or seen the announcements about 10 meters on the BARC email group, the 10 meter band is really picking up due to the solar cycle.

The Sweepstakes or “Sweeps” as it is usually called is a contest in which modest stations can do exceptionally well.  There’s no need for giant towers and antennas or legal-limit amplifiers, for simple antennas and a “barefoot” HF rig will do just fine.  Sweepstakes brings out many US and Canadian operators, and there will be a lot of stations to work on the bands.  More stations = more contacts = more fun!

So get on the air during the sweeps and make contacts throughout the US and Canada.  This is an excellent opportunity for you to get that Worked All States Award with lots of operators on the air and great band conditions.  If you’d like to know more about Sweepstakes, download the Sweepstakes Operating Guide – there are simple explanations of the rules and a list of resource articles and websites to help you get the most from your Sweepstakes weekend.

Jamboree On The Air 2011

Jamboree On The Air

Date:  October 15, 2011
Time:  8 AM to 5 PM
Location:  Cache County Sheriff's Complex 3rd Floor Room 3, 1225 West 200 North, Logan UT

Bridgerland Amateur Radio Club is participating in the Jamboree On The Air (JOTA).  All scouts and their leaders are invited.

JOTA is an annual event in which Scouts from all over the world can speak to each other by means of amateur radio contacts.  The purpose is to meet each other, share their Scouting experiences, exchange ideas, learn from each other, and gain a mutual understanding, via the raido waves.

There will three radio stations set up.  A licensed amateur radio operator will be present at each of the radios to help with the radio operation.

• A HF station that covers the 160, 80, 40, 20 17, 15, 12, 10, and 6 meter bands that uses skywave propagation for long range station to station communication.
• A VHF/UHF station that covers the 2 meter and 70 centimeter bands using Internet Radio Linking Project (IRLP) that can link to amateur radio stations around the world by using Voice over IP (VoIP).
•A VHF/UHF station that covers the 2 meter and 70 centimeter band using Digital Smart Technologies for Amateur Radio (D-STAR), which is digital voice, that can link to other amateur radio D-STAR stations around the world.

The Amateur Radio Service is one of the radio services internationally recognized by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU).  It benefits from a share of the precious spectrum, and from specific privileges, which make it the most flexible and versatile of all telecommunication services.  It has earned its status due to its roles in education, development, and research, but most of all due to its role as a public service.

Plan on attending JOTA to contact Scouts from around the world by amateur radio and to learn more about amateur radio.

The Bridgerland Amateur Radio Club (BARC) will be offering to the Scouts an entry level class for the Technician Class License.  The class will help you learn the material you need to know to get your very first Amateur Radio License.  Details on the location and times for the class will be available at the JOTA event.
